When trying to determine the right sinus infection remedy you will need to determine whether it is a standard treatment you want to use or an alternative method of treating the discomforts of sinusitis. The first step is to discuss with your health care provider what they would suggest and whether you need to get a prescription of if over the counter medication will be enough to take care of the discomfort you are dealing with.

The first things that will be recommended will likely be to get some rest. But when you are resting do not lie flat. That will not help the sinuses to clear. It will also be suggested that the sinus sufferer drink lots of warm drinks. It is also good to breath in steam from a humidifier or vaporizer using a towel to breathe through. If you do not have either one an ordinary tea kettle will work almost as well.

If none of these help then you may need to get a sinus infection remedy from your local drug store. This can be in the form of a nasal spray, though it is suggested that it not be used for more than three days because it can have after effects on the sinuses that will include swelling. A saline solution is better than a decongestant and will help to open the passages. Over the counter anti-inflammatories/pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen may also be helpful depending on the cause of your sinus infection.

Alternative remedies like the use of essential oils or herbs have had some luck. Some of them, like peppermint oil or eucalyptus oils will help to open the blocked passages while Echinacea, Ma Huang and garlic are all known to help fight the infection. But sometimes the only thing that will work as a sinus infection remedy is a prescription for antibiotics. Although many people prefer not to use them, fearing that their bodies too easily build up a resistance, there are times when it is the only alternative to getting rid of an uncomfortable condition.
