A question asked by many sinusitis sufferers is whether there is a sinus infection contagious issue. There seems to be a bit of a split on this question. That is because sinusitis often follows a cold or is seen mistakenly as part of the discomforts that can come along with a cold. This, in itself, is only partly true. Someone can develop a sinus infection when they have a cold, but this is more because of the excess mucus a cold sufferer might be enduring instead of the sinus difficulties actually being part of the cold. The sinus infection itself is not something that can be caught, but if the person also is suffering from a cold, this is very contagious.

Sinusitis is caused by the blocking of the sinus passages that lie under the eyes, nose and forehead. They fill with mucus, becoming blocked and then a host of symptoms occur which give rise to headaches, pain under the eyes and even pain in the jaw. These symptoms vary from suffer to sufferer. Allergies can also be a trigger of sinusitis, since the passages may, once again, become filled with mucus due to the body’s reactions to a particular allergy. But fortunately no matter what the potential trigger there is no sinus infection contagious issue to worry about.

A person can suffer either from acute, lasting no more than a few weeks, or chronic sinusitis, which is a longer lasting and usually a recurring problem. Neither one of which creates a sinus infection contagious problem. Chronic sinus infections can be caused by dental problems as well. This can be because the bacteria from a dental infection can spread to the sinuses causing an infection to begin there as well whereas a case of acute sinus infection is more likely to be caused by a virus or fungal issue.
