The Range of Sinus Infection Symptoms
Defined Tag: Sinus Infection Symptoms. Sinus infection symptoms can relate to symptoms affecting the sinuses, which are hollow air pockets in the body. Generally, the condition pertains to four specific pairs of cavities located on the face, along the skull and bones around the nose. They are the frontal sinuses – found over the eyes in the brow area; maxillary sinuses – inside each cheekbone; ethmoid sinuses – located just behind the bridge of the nose and between the eyes; and the sphenoid sinuses – found behind the ethmoid sinuses in the upper region of the nose and behind the eyes. The sinuses are connected to the nose allowing for free exchange of air and mucus, and each is joined to the nasal passages by a continuous mucous membrane lining. Sinusitis occurs through inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passageways. This can result from an infection in the nasal passage, allergic reactions, or other types of immune reactions. Air is trapped inside the sinuses, resulting in increased pressure along the cavities. Pus or other secretions may also contribute to this clogging. Among sinus infection symptom, pain is generally reported, as well as fever, weakness, tiredness, cough which becomes more severe at night, and nasal congestion, often accompanied by a greenish-yellow mucous discharge. Bad breath, nausea, dental pain, reduced breathing capacity, and redness of the skin have also been reported. Nasal congestion with discharge or postnasal drip (when the mucus drips down to the throat behind the nose, causing a sore throat), fever, pain or pressure around the affected sinus – made worse when coughing, straining, or lying down – are common symptoms of sinus infection. Depending on which sinus is inflamed, pain and pressure will vary. Ethmoid sinus infections will cause pain around the inner corner of the eye or down one side of the nose. Maxillary sinuses will give pain across the cheekbone, under or around the eye, and around the upper teeth. The forehead will hurt from frontal sinus infection. Deep headache with pain behind and on top of the head, across the forehead, and behind the eye are characteristic of sphenoid sinus infection. Sinus infection symptoms can be a combination of the above mentioned conditions, the intensity of which can be attributed to whether the sinusitis is acute or chronic.
