Sinus infection treatment comes into play when the sinuses – hollow cavities in the body – that are found along the skull, become inflamed. This can result from an infection of the nasal passageway, allergic reactions, or other types of immunity-related conditions. These sinuses, located behind the eye, the bridge of the nose, and the cheekbones, are connected to the nasal passage, allowing for free exchange of air and mucus. When inflamed, air gets trapped into the sinus, building up pressure. Pus and other secretions may further contribute to increase this pressure.

Decongestants reduce the congestion, and pain medication relives the pain. Treatment can also be helped at home through steam inhalation, application of warm compresses on the affected area, and use of a saline nasal spray. However, OTC nose drops and decongestant sprays should not be used for more than a few days, as these can backfire and lead to more congestion and swelling. Antibiotics are reserved for when the sinus infection is caused by bacteria. Chronic sinusitis treatment is enhanced through corticosteroid nasal spray, use of antibiotics, and under extreme cases, use of oral steroids.

If medical treatment fails, surgery is considered. Surgery helps to enlarge the natural openings of the sinuses to allow drainage. Nasal polyps interfering with proper nasal drainage can also be removed, and surgery can be used to correct a deviated septum to ensure an open airway.

Sinus infection treatment is mostly done through medication. Most infection goes away after a few days. Medical recourse should be sought if the inflammation persists. Only under cases of chronic sinusitis and failure of medication therapy do doctors consider surgery.
