What is a sinus infection and where does it come from? To understand this, a person first needs to understand what the sinuses are and what their purpose is. The sinuses are located behind the cheeks, jaw and the eyebrows. They are actually air passages whose function is to make mucus. This mucus is used to clean the bacteria, and other dirt particles, that can be breathed along with the air you are bringing into your lungs. In a person’s nose, there are very small hairs called cilia. These keep the dirt from getting in. They also help to keep remove the mucus from the sinuses when there is too much.

If you are still trying to figure out what is a sinus infection you should know that it is when the sinuses become blocked. These passages become filled with the mucus which allows for the growth of bacteria. This condition is also called sinusitis. These infections seem to be caused by congestion which in turn is caused by the blockage of the sinuses. Sinusitis is known to be related to allergies or colds, but not necessarily caused by them.

The signs of sinusitis are head pain behind the eyes or a cold that begins to improve then gets worse again. There are other symptoms that may include sore teeth or a fever. If you think you have an infection of the sinuses you should see your health care provider. They will likely suggest an antibiotic depending on what they feel is the sources of the sinusitis. It can be caused by a virus, bacteria or fungal condition. Sinusitis is now classified into at least four conditions depending on the location of the pain associated with it. This gives the health care provider a better feel for what might be causing the problem. There are maxillary, ethmoid, frontal and sphenoid sinus infections with each one putting pressure on a different part of the face to cause discomfort along with the infection. Most cases of sinusitis clear up in a matter of a couple of weeks. But some, called chronic sinusitis can last for several months. So, if someone asks you what is a sinus infection you can tell them it’s a condition that causes facial pain due to a blockage in the sinus passages.
